Mountain carting in Grindelwald

It was a cloudy and rainy day on our second day in the Swiss town Interlaken. I’d planned to go up to Grindelwald First and have a look at the view from the top of the mountain. But that wasn’t going to happen. The top of the mountain was covered in thick clouds. There was no point going up that high, but I still wanted a day trip into the mountains and we ended up taking the train from Wilderswil to Grindelwald.

The views from the train were already stunning, as we slowly got higher up into the Alps. In Grindelwald we took some photos and asked at the information desk what our options for activities were. It was cold, but not raining yet, and so we took the gondola up to Schreckfeld and bought a ticket for the mountain carts. We were suddenly a lot higher and the temperature had dropped a lot too! We were in the cloud and surrounded by snow.

At the cart station we were given helmets and instructions and off we went. From the gondola the track looked so scary. The roads were super small and would occasionally also have other traffic on them. Besides that they looked very steep in parts! Our tricycles were running on gravity, but did have very good breaks! After the first few meters I got a little bolder and ever more excited. This was so much fun!

I overtook a few slow people and before I knew it, I was at the bottom. I can’t believe how fast you get down. It looked like such a long track when we came up in the gondola. I wish we could have gone all the way to the bottom station, but that was the track for the trottbikes, or scooters. When we’d all made it, I decided to walk the rest of the way down with two of the other girls.

The path was pretty steep in places, especially where we came across a landslide and had to hold onto a rail. But it was so scenic! The mountains were blanketed in clouds, but underneath the grass was bright green and the wild flowers were blooming. We walked past cute houses, of which some sold Swiss cheese. Being closer to the ground it was also a lot easier to take nice photos than from the gondola.

We may not have seen the top of First, but this day was so much fun! Maybe one day I get to see the very top and enjoy the mountains without so much white, but for a dreary day this was a great activity!
